No medical exam term life insurance

No medical exam term life insurance is a widely popular life insurance option. It offers more convenience than a regular term policy, and the price difference is usually minimal.

What is no medical exam term life insurance?

While a no exam life insurance plan offers you clear advantages, it means higher risk for the insurer.

One way insurance companies cover this higher risk is by limiting the amount of coverage they offer with no exam policies. The maximum coverage most companies offer for a non medical exam term policy is $1,000,000.

Note that no medical exam policies are still fully underwritten — just not with a medical exam.

In addition to being more convenient, term life is much more affordable when compared to whole life insurance. We recently compared term vs whole life insurance in another article.

Thoughts

We often recommend that if you have not seen a doctor in over a year, that you apply for a no medical exam policy. After you are approved for a policy, you have the option to apply with another company and take a medical exam to see if you can get a better rate. With life insurance, the most important thing is to get yourself a policy as soon as possible.
If you are applying for a policy that requires an exam, it takes 8 weeks to get approved, sometimes longer. It is a good idea to make your first payment at the time of the application, so you have a binder that guaranteed you the option to buy a policy if you are deemed insurable.

4. Instant/Rapid Issue Policies with Online Applications

If you prefer to apply online yourself, now you can get a quote and complete the application without the assistance of a sales agent. The online application takes about 10 – 20 minutes to complete. Of course, you have the option to speak with an agent. The choice is yours.

Although the companies that offer these policies may have unfamiliar names, they are backed by A-rated insurance companies — so you can rest assured that your coverage is secure.
These policies are still fully underwritten. This means the underwriters at the insurance company run your pharmacy report, your motor vehicle report, and a financial background report, so be truthful when applying.

Upon completing the application, you will receive instant feedback on whether your application has been approved or declined, or if more information is needed. The company may require additional medical information before issuing you a policy.

5. Group Insurance Policies

Getting a group term or whole life policy involves answering a few health questions. Insurers only require that you not be in a medical facility or require full-time medical care. You join an association to gain access to these products, and they’re the same type of group policies you would get through an employer.

Depending on which insurance company you choose, the application will have 7 – 12 questions. There’s only one health class, and the premium costs typically increase every 5 years.

For people who are in poor health, these are a good option.

FAQs

How are no exam life insurance policies different from policies that require a physical?

Answer: The difference is the coverage amounts and health classes offered. Policies that do not require an exam have lower coverage amounts.

What insurers use to qualify you without an exam?

  • Pharmacy report, which lists all medications you’ve been prescribed over the last 5–10 years
  • Motor vehicle department report
  • Medical Insurance Bureau report (to see if you’ve applied for or been denied life insurance in the past)
  • Credit/financial history (not all companies check this)

Can you get term life insurance without a medical exam?

Absolutely. Forgoing the medical exam makes the whole process of getting life insurance exponentially easier.

You get to bypass a medical examiner coming to your home or office.

This means:

  • No needle stick to draw blood
  • No cup for a urine specimen
  • No scale to take your weight
  • No blood pressure cuff on your arm
  • No waiting around for your lab results

And, most important, no stress.

It’s important to know that when you apply for a no medical exam policy, you will be asked about your health history and your public reports will be checked.

There’s no difference in coverage between a policy that does require an exam and one that doesn’t.

Why consider a life insurance plan without a physical?

The traditional process of obtaining life insurance went something like this: You set up an appointment with your doctor to check out your physical health, and the results were shared with the insurance company, where an underwriter reviewed your material. Eventually, about six to eight weeks after your initial contact with an agent, you received your policy.

But for some people, the idea of waiting over a month is undesirable or, in some cases, just not feasible. Some, for instance, must find a life insurance plan quickly in order to apply for a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan. Others find out that their divorce settlement requires life insurance and they must find an acceptable insurance plan in a hurry so that the proceedings can continue. In these situations, people need to get a life insurance plan as soon as possible so as not to disrupt other areas of their life.

For many people, the idea of forgoing the physical exam altogether is simply appealing. No scheduling a half-hour appointment. No getting poked and prodded. No stress from wondering whether their medical health is sufficient to get a good rate or if there’s anything lurking in their tests that they didn’t know about. And, most important, no waiting. Just one online survey and they’re done, with some companies approving life insurance plans in as little as a day!

How much life insurance can I get without a physical?

Most carriers offer up to $1,000,000 in coverage if you choose to forgo the exam. Any amount over this will require a medical exam.

Are no exam policies more expensive?

Contrary to what you might have heard, no medical exam policies are not more expensive than those that do require an exam.

It’s true that they used to cost more, but the increasing popularity of these plans has made them more competitively priced.

A few decades ago, it would have been hard to find an insurance company that would let you apply without taking a physical. But more insurers are getting on board. That means you have more choices.

There are five types of no medical exam term life insurance policies. Which one you choose determines the cost.
